SONIC NOTATION PROJECT

Experimental Project with the "Sonic Notation Orchestra"

The Sonic Notation Orchestra (SNOrchestra) was a group of musicians and visual artists who repeatedly interpreted each other's work, creating a network of related music and art. Guided by a specific challenge for each round, the artists created visual interpretations of the music and the musicians wrote music inspired by the visual art. The project produced 14 new pieces of music and 23 new pieces of art.

My intention was to spark a lifetime of invention and exploration for the artists who participated. The project was designed to enable the discovery of new artistic tools by borrowing ideas across disciplines (artists from musicians and vice versa); to encourage the exchange of ideas for how to approach a creative challenge; to facilitate a deeper understanding of our artistic choices; and to find ways to add more layers of meaning to our work.

The project is dear to my heart and it took a great deal of dedication from the SNOrchestra to have kept it going for almost two years. I like to think that we're on hiatus and will pick it up again at some point.
