Biography - Sandra Mogensen
Sandra Mogensen—pianist—was born in Sarnia, Ontario, Canada. She did her early musical studies with her mother, and continued with further training at the University of Western Ontario, the Mozarteum in Salzburg, the Royal Danish Conservatory of Music in Copenhagen, and at Westminster Choir College in Princeton, NJ.
As a performer, Sandra works both as solo pianist and in collaboration with singers. She has played in concert in both capacities in Canada, the USA, the UK, and Europe. A versatile musician, Sandra has extensive experience with chamber music, musical theatre and choral repertoire, liturgical music, arranging, improvisation, and composition. Well-versed in English, French, German, Danish, Norwegian, and Latvian, Sandra is known for her language and diction coaching for singers, and has had an extensive teaching career mentoring musicians in their processes of self-discovery and artistic development.
Sandra recorded her first solo album in 2006 for a 2007 release in conjunction with the centenary of Edvard Grieg’s death. SANDRA MOGENSEN: Piano Music of Edvard Grieg, on the Chestnut Hall Music label, was warmly received and praised. A second disc of Grieg’s piano music (SANDRA MOGENSEN: Piano Music of Edvard Grieg Volume 2) followed in 2009, and SANDRA MOGENSEN: Piano Music of Edvard Grieg Volume 3, was released in 2012. A fourth disc of Grieg's opus 33 was released in 2017.
Since January 2019, Sandra’s main focus has been on researching, performing, recording, teaching, and promoting the repertoire of female composers. Her six-album project, en pleine lumière, saw the release of Volume 1 (composers born in mid-19th century) in December of 2019. During the pandemic, Sandra & American pianist, Erica Sipes co-created a new project, “Piano Music She Wrote” in order to help pianists discover compositions by women.
