Biography - Tia Vellani
Cross-disciplinary artist Tia Vellani is a visual artist; a research scientist; a creative director and producer of collaborative, cross-disciplinary, multimedia art projects; a multi-instrumental musician; and a jewellery designer.
Her installations, playable sculptures, sound art, science-inspired jewellery, paintings, collages, digital art, and glass bead tapestries have been exhibited in the USA the UK, Ireland, Italy, and Spain.
Her first solo exhibition, What is the Sound of One Heart Dancing?, was supported by the Arts Council of Ireland's Arts & Disability Connect Scheme, managed by Arts & Disability Ireland. It took place in 2021 in the AKA Kilkenny Fringe Festival. Contributing artists were Helen Walsh, Jennie Grangel, Eoin Coffey, and Sandra Mogensen.
Dr. Vellani was an invited speaker in 2021 at the Art+Science Salon which was supported by Science Gallery Dublin and Trinity Long Room Hub. She was an invited guest lecturer in 2020 and 2021 for a Science and Art Postgraduate Course at the Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais, Belo Horizonte, Brazil. She has participated in artist residencies in Greece, UK, Italy, and Spain, and has won awards from the Arts Council of Ireland, Fire Station Artists' Studios and the American Society for Microbiology (for art).
She graduated with a Ph.D. in Molecular Biology at the University of British Columbia and conducted postdoctoral research in genetics, molecular biology, biochemistry, and genomics in the USA at the University of Miami's Biochemistry and Molecular Biology Department and in Ireland at Teagasc's Crop Science Department. She holds a Grade IX Royal Conservatory of Music certification in piano. She has played piano, electronic keyboard, concert flute, West African drums, and sung in innumerable musical ensembles since childhood.
Dr. Vellani is a member of Visual Artists Ireland, Irish Music Rights Organisation, Artlinks, and the Design and Crafts Council of Ireland. She mines for insights at the confluence of truth and beauty in Kilkenny, Ireland.
